Fall is here, and just because boating season is technically over doesn’t mean it’s time to get off the water quite yet! There’s still plenty of time to be spent on the water this fall. If you’re in New Jersey, there’s plenty of great spots to do some fall fishing or just enjoy time on the water. In our blog, we’ll talk about some good spots for fall fishing, what conditions you can expect, and some fun upcoming boating events!
Local Spots For Fall Fishing
Tuckerton Cove
We might be biased, but Tuckerton Cove is one of our favorite fishing spots! Tuckerton Cove is a tidal bay and estuary in Ocean County, NJ, known for its calm waters and popularity for kayaking, boating, exploring local maritime history, and fishing for smooth dogfish and bluefish.
Pohatcong Lake
Located in Tuckerton, Pohatcong Lake is a popular spot for shore-based angling, small boat fishing, and a tranquil setting for anglers. Pohatcong Lake offers great fishing for largemouth bass, chain pickerel, and bluegill.
Little Egg Reef
Little Egg Reef is a 1.5-square-mile artificial reef site located off the coast of Ocean County, NJ. It is a popular spot for fishing and diving due to its population of black sea bass, tautog, and flounder.
Conditions You Can Expect In October in New Jersey
Traffic & Crowds
In the fall, recreational traffic drops significantly compared to summer. This will provide you with quiet waterways and easier marina access.
Weather & Scenery
Early fall brings crisp, clear days that are ideal for coastal cruising and viewing peak autumn foliage along rivers and lakes. Temperatures can fluctuate with some days being warmer and some being chilly, so it’s best to pack layers, especially if you’ll be out all day.
What to Watch For
Keep an eye on rapidly shifting wind patterns, cooler temperatures later in the day, and shorter daylight hours. These changes from summer sailing can cause anything from minor inconveniences to major safety concerns if you’re not prepared.
